Heat Pump vs. Resistive Heater: EV Winter Range

Heat-pump EVs lose meaningfully less range in winter than resistive-heater EVs. The difference is typically 10–15 percentage points of range loss in cold weather.

How a resistive heater works

A resistive heater (PTC) works like a space heater: it passes current through a resistive element to generate heat. It's simple and cheap, but at best it converts one unit of electricity into about one unit of heat — and every one of those units comes out of your range.

How a heat pump works

A heat pump moves heat instead of generating it. It compresses a refrigerant to harvest ambient heat from the outside air (even cold air contains usable heat) and releases it into the cabin. Depending on conditions, it can deliver two to three times more heat than the electricity it consumes.

Because it multiplies the energy input, a heat pump keeps the cabin warm for a fraction of the range cost of a resistive heater — especially around 0°C (32°F), where the efficiency gap is largest.

The range difference in practice

In the same cold, a heat-pump EV typically loses 10–15 percentage points less range than a resistive-heater EV. That's why our loss bands split heat-pump and resistive models: at -10°C to -20°C, a heat-pump model is estimated at 20–30% loss versus 30–40% for resistive.

The gap narrows in extreme cold (below about -20°C) as heat-pump efficiency declines, but it rarely disappears entirely.

Which EVs have heat pumps

Standard today on Tesla (2021+ Model 3/Y, S/X), the BMW i4, and most Volvo EVs. It's standard or optional by market on Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, Kia EV6, VW ID.4, Audi Q4 e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E (2024+), Polestar 2 (Plus pack), and Rivian (later builds).

Notable resistive-only models include the discontinued Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf, and most trims of the Ford F-150 Lightning.

If winter range is a priority, verify the heat pump on the specific trim before you buy — availability varies by market and model year.

Frequently asked questions

Usually yes. In a cold climate the heat pump can be worth several percent of range every winter day, and it also speeds up cabin warm-up.
