How Much Range Do EVs Lose in Winter?
Expect roughly 10–40% range loss in winter, with heat-pump EVs at the low end and resistive-heater EVs at the high end. Preconditioning while plugged in recovers a meaningful share.

The short answer
In freezing conditions, electric vehicles typically lose between 10% and 40% of their rated range. Recurrent's fleet data puts the average at about 20% in freezing weather, while AAA's controlled testing at -7°C (20°F) found roughly 12% loss with the climate system off and up to 41% with cabin heating running.
The spread is driven by three variables: how cold it gets, whether the car has a heat pump or a resistive heater, and whether you precondition from the wall before driving.
Why cold cuts range
Cold attacks range through three mechanisms. First, the battery's liquid electrolyte thickens as temperatures drop, slowing lithium-ion movement and raising internal resistance — so less stored energy reaches the wheels. Second, a cold pack can't accept charge quickly, so the car limits regenerative braking until the battery warms. Third, energy is spent heating the cabin and keeping the battery in its operating window.
None of this is permanent damage. It's a temporary efficiency penalty that disappears as the pack warms — which is exactly why preconditioning matters so much.
The temperature curve
Loss scales with cold, not linearly but in bands. Around 0°C (32°F) expect roughly 10–20% loss. From -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F), expect 20–35%. Below -20°C (-4°F), expect 30–45%.
Heat pumps sit at the lower end of each band because they move existing heat instead of generating it; resistive heaters sit at the upper end because they burn electricity directly for warmth.
What else stacks the losses
Beyond temperature and heating, three real-world factors compound winter loss: higher aerodynamic drag in cold, dense air; snow and slush adding rolling resistance; and winter tires, which typically cost 5–10% efficiency for a large safety gain.
Speed matters more in winter, too. Highway driving already drains faster than city driving, and cold air makes that gap wider.
How to recover lost miles
The single biggest lever is preconditioning while plugged in, so the warm-up energy comes from the wall instead of the battery. Heated seats and a steering wheel use a fraction of the energy of full cabin heat. Keeping tires at the correct pressure and slowing down a few mph on the highway both pay back immediately.
