Four things separate the good from the bad in winter: a heat pump (less range loss), aggressive battery preconditioning (faster cold charging), strong thermal management (battery stays in its operating window), and a usable fast-charging network in cold regions.
Range matters less than you'd think — a smaller efficient heat-pump EV can beat a large resistive-heater EV on real winter usability.
Best overall: Tesla Model Y and Model 3
The standard heat pump, automatic Supercharger preconditioning, and the Supercharger network make Tesla the default cold-climate choice. Recurrent's data consistently ranks them among the best winter range retainers.
Best fast-chargers: Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 and Kia EV6

The BMW i4 eDrive40 combines a standard heat pump with good highway efficiency. The Volvo EX40 is a solid compact-SUV choice with a standard heat pump. For trucks, the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning are capable but lose more range in cold — budget extra and precondition aggressively.
What to avoid (and why)
The discontinued Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt are cheap, but their air-cooled or resistive-only setups make them the worst cold performers on this list. They're fine as winter commuters, not as cold-weather road-trip machines.
