How to Precondition an EV Battery for Winter
Preconditioning warms the battery and cabin from wall power before you drive or charge. It's the single most effective way to recover winter range and speed up cold fast-charging.

What preconditioning actually does
Preconditioning heats the battery pack (and optionally the cabin) before you unplug. The key insight is where the energy comes from: when you're plugged in, that warm-up draws from the wall instead of the battery, so you start every trip with a warm pack and your full range available.
The same process applies before DC fast-charging. A warm pack accepts charge at full speed; a cold-soaked pack charges slowly until it warms.
When to precondition
Precondition every cold morning while plugged in, ideally 20–45 minutes before departure. Before a road-trip fast-charge, precondition en route — most EVs do this automatically when you navigate to a charger.
The colder it is, the more preconditioning pays off. Below about -10°C (14°F), it's the difference between a normal start and a painful one.
How to do it by brand
Tesla: set a scheduled departure in the app, or navigate to a Supercharger to auto-precondition the battery en route.
Hyundai/Kia (e-GMP): enable 'Battery Preconditioning' in the EV settings, then set a DC charger as the navigation destination — it is not always on by default.
Ford, Rivian, Volvo, BMW, Polestar, VW, Audi: use the mobile app or a scheduled departure while plugged in to warm the cabin and battery.
Preconditioning vs. remote start
Remote start warms the cabin but not always the battery. True preconditioning targets the pack temperature, which is what matters for range and charging speed. For most EVs, the scheduled-departure or navigate-to-charger feature is what triggers full battery conditioning.
