EV Range in Extreme Cold (-25°C and Below)
Below about -25°C (-13°F), range loss climbs into the 30–45% band and charging slows dramatically. Extreme cold is survivable with preconditioning and a bigger buffer.

What changes below -25°C
At extreme cold, the battery electrolyte becomes sluggish enough that internal resistance spikes, and the heat pump's efficiency collapses — most EVs switch to resistive backup heating around -20°C, which is far less efficient. Cabin heating now dominates energy consumption.
Charging also suffers: a deeply cold-soaked pack may refuse to charge at all until warmed, and fast-charging rates can drop by half or more.
Expected losses
Plan for 30–45% range loss below -20°C, with heat-pump models at the low end and resistive-heater models at the high end. Short trips hurt most: a cold cabin reheated from scratch every 10 minutes amortizes that energy over very few miles.
Regenerative braking may also be disabled entirely until the pack warms, which adds friction-brake wear and slightly higher consumption.
How to manage it
Precondition while plugged in, keep the state of charge above 40–50%, park in a garage or insulated spot, and expect every charge to take longer. In true polar conditions, treat the EV as a local vehicle and plan short hops rather than long highway legs.
