Does Cold Weather Damage EV Batteries?
Cold itself doesn't permanently damage an EV battery — the loss is temporary efficiency. The real risks are repeatedly fast-charging a cold-soaked pack to full and letting it sit deeply discharged in the cold.

The short answer
Winter range loss is temporary and reversible. Lithium-ion cells store and release less energy when cold, but warming them restores normal behavior — nothing is permanently lost. Batteries also prefer cold storage over hot storage for long-term longevity.
What actually hurts
The damage risks come from two habits: repeatedly fast-charging a very cold pack to 100%, and leaving the car deeply discharged in sub-zero weather for days. Both stress the cells. Charging a cold pack isn't damaging by itself — the car limits power to protect it.
How to protect the pack
Precondition before fast-charging, keep routine charging between 20–80%, and leave the car plugged in during multi-day cold snaps so it can manage its own temperature and keep a healthy state of charge.
