Winter Tires and EV Range: What to Know
Winter tires usually cost 5–10% of range through higher rolling resistance — a small price for the safety they provide in snow and ice. The right pressure and studless design keep the penalty low.

Why winter tires affect range
Winter tires use softer rubber compounds and deeper tread to grip snow and ice. That grip comes with higher rolling resistance, which costs energy. Expect roughly 5–10% range loss versus a low-rolling-resistance all-season tire — on top of the battery's own cold losses.
Why they're still worth it
The range penalty is small next to the safety benefit. EVs are heavy, and their instant torque makes winter traction even more important. In regions with mandatory winter-tire laws (like Quebec) or serious snow, winter tires are non-negotiable — and the range hit is simply the cost of driving safely.
Minimizing the penalty
Keep tires at the manufacturer's recommended pressure (cold air drops pressure, which adds rolling resistance). Choose studless 'friction' winter tires rather than studded ones unless you need studs for ice — studs add their own rolling resistance and noise. And accelerate gently: hard launches waste far more energy than the tires do.
Studded vs. studless
Studded tires grip ice best but add rolling resistance and are restricted or banned in some regions. Studless winter tires (also called Nordic or friction tires) handle snow and cold pavement well with a smaller efficiency penalty. For most EV drivers, studless is the right default.
