Why EVs lose range in the cold
Cold weather attacks range through three mechanisms. First, the liquid electrolyte inside the battery becomes more viscous as temperatures drop, slowing lithium-ion movement and raising internal resistance — so less of the stored energy can be delivered at the wheels. Second, a cold pack cannot accept charge as quickly, which is why regenerative braking is limited until the battery warms up. Third, the vehicle must spend energy heating the cabin and keeping the battery inside its operating window.
