BMW iX in Cold Weather
By Félix Delgado · Last reviewed October 18, 2026 · How we estimate
One of the very best luxury SUVs for cold climates: a huge 105.2 kWh usable battery, manual battery preconditioning, and unique radiant heating panels in the dash, glovebox, and doors that warm passengers directly with minimal energy.

| EPA range (20°C) | 309 mi (497 km) | EPA fueleconomy.gov — iX xDrive50 (often exceeds EPA in real-world tests) |
| Cabin heating | heat pump | Advanced heat pump standard, paired with radiant dashboard/door panel surface heating. |
| Battery | ~111.5 kWh gross (~105.2 kWh usable) NMC pack, 400V architecture. | BMW |
| Peak DC fast charge | 195 kW (CCS / NACS adapter) | BMW |
| Recommended preconditioning | 25–35 min via iDrive manual toggle or navigation | BMW |
| Cold-charging behavior | BMW includes both automatic nav-based preconditioning and a manual 'Precondition Battery' button in iDrive — a huge winter advantage when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto instead of the built-in nav. | Manufacturer + third-party tests |
Cold-weather tips
- 1
Use the Radiant Heat Package surfaces
BMW heats the armrests, door panels, lower dashboard, and steering wheel by contact and infrared — allowing you to keep air temperature 2–3°C lower.
- 2
Use the manual battery preconditioning button
If you navigate with CarPlay/Android Auto in winter, tap the manual preconditioning toggle in the iDrive Charging menu 30 minutes before your stop.
- 3
Activate Efficient Mode on winter highways
Limits HVAC peaks and optimizes the electrically excited synchronous motors (EESM) for impressive cold highway range.
- 4
Precondition while plugged in
Set a departure timer in the My BMW app to heat the 105 kWh battery from the wall.
